Karen Lewis, a native of Los Angeles, California, was intrigued by television at an early age. She did not necessarily dream of being on the box itself, but frequently imagined herself sitting with the late great, Johnny Carson, or David Letterman doing a late night interview, discussing her achievements in entertainment.
So instead of her sitting on the late night couch, she decided that she would rather book other people to do just that. And a publicist was born.
Success, keen achievement and astute test scores propelled her to go to college at the University of California at Berkeley. There, Karen studied Accounting and Legal Studies. After passing on law school and working four (4) years in Accounting, she grew weary of numbers and being chained to a desk.
Concurrently, she was assisting an entertainment manager with a fellow colleague; the manager was working with recording artists. It was through this experience that she caught the entertainment bug. She moved back to Los Angeles on a quest to finally work in entertainment, specifically the music industry.
Due to Karen's innate ability to be resourceful, she went into business for herself. She founded going public pr in 1995. After doing public relations for about six (6) months as an independent, she was offered an in-house position at MoJAZZ/Motown Records.
At Motown, she really honed in on her craft. She worked with such artists as Norman Brown, J. Spencer, IMPROMP2, Norman Connors, Lalah Hathaway and jazz great Lionel Hampton. She created diligent campaigns for artists, developed a speaking circuit for some of the executives and enhanced strategic alliances for the label. She maintained additional clients while at Motown.
Ultimately, going public p.r. became a full service public relations and marketing firm, specializing in corporate and entertainment pr and bringing the best of those worlds together, as she describes it. Her clientele, to date, is: Faithful Central Bible Church (Los Angeles); The Forum, former home to the Champion team Los Angeles Lakers; Dr. Kenneth C. Ulmer; Urban Corporation of America (UMCA), a marketing and branding agency which specializes in urban marketing; and a host of others.
Karen displays absolute commitment and enthusiasm that contributes greatly to the success of going public p.r. She has acquired and maintained exclusive contacts in both entertainment, corporate and media industries. As a self-taught publicist, she has an uncanny ability to develop sound strategies, create clever promotions, write concisely and clearly, juggle many projects simultaneously, pitch ideas to key people in the media by using genial persuasion and think outside the box.
Her dedication as a public relations/marketing exec and entrepreneur reflects a keen determination to meet her clients' needs. Karen notes that public relations is a stellar discipline to have: You become well-versed in sales, you manage crises, you meet deadlines and expectations and it's so rewarding to get coverage and keen exposure for a client or his/her product. I love my career and business!! She can and has exercised her persistence and diligence to get the most and best for her clients.
